Schildkrot dolls are the most beautiful children's play dolls that are completely made in Germany to order. Schildkrot is German for 'turtle' and each doll has a turtle logo on the back of it's neck.
The company first began in 1873 as Rhenish Hard Rubber Wares Factory, making hair combs and decorative objects from hard rubber which were exported around the world. The company were also experimenting with a new material called celluloid, and first started making dolls using this in 1896. The doll division of the company was first called Schildkrot in 1899. The realistic celluloid dolls were a great success as they were hard wearing and easy to clean compared to traditional porcelain, papier mache, wood and rag dolls. Despite two world wars, the bombing and destruction of the celluloid factory, various mergers and reorganisations, Schildkrot continued to grow and remains a highly respected traditional doll manufacturer in Germany and around the world to this day.
There are three main ranges in the Schildkrot collection: play dolls, collectors dolls and traditional dolls. Petalina will stock a selection of children's dolls including baby dolls, toddlers and the new jointed dolls together with some clothing for all the ranges. Those of you who are familiar with the Miaculti Babies will already appreciate the quality of the Schildkrot dolls as this is the company responsible for the manufacture of these gorgeous dolls.
